How to check your federal tax refund

Where’s My Refund? is the primary IRS tool for checking a federal refund. Office staff generally do not have a faster status than the system provides.

Quick principle

Use the official online or phone route first when it can solve the task. If you need in-person help, schedule the appointment and bring a complete file.

01

Have three details ready

Use the Social Security or ITIN number, filing status and exact whole-dollar refund amount shown on the return.

02

Follow the tracker message

The tool can show return received, refund approved or refund sent, and may provide specific action instructions when more information is needed.

03

Escalate only when appropriate

Call only after the processing window stated by the IRS or when the tracker tells you to. Keep any letter and your filed return available.
