Methodology and sources

How Tax Office Guide collects, filters and presents IRS office information.

Primary office source

Office records come from the public JSON service used by the official IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center locator. The current dataset was checked on September 3, 2026 and includes 347 physical offices across 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

What we keep

We retain the office name, address, ZIP code, published regular hours, local phone, latitude, longitude and source identifier. A deterministic script normalizes routes and verifies that every guide cites an IRS-controlled domain.

What we exclude

Records without a physical address are excluded. Temporary closure notices and special-hour alerts are also excluded because they can expire before a static page is rebuilt. For that reason, every office page tells readers to confirm current status before traveling.

Guide standards

Guides summarize official IRS material in plain language. They link to the primary source, avoid promises about outcomes and distinguish preparation information from tax or legal advice. We do not claim first-hand experience with any office.

Corrections

If an office record looks wrong, compare it with the official locator first. Include the office name, state, field that needs review and the IRS source when contacting the editorial team.
