Filing help

Free tax preparation through VITA and TCE

VITA and TCE sites are different from IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers. They are community-based programs focused on preparing eligible taxpayers’ returns.

Quick principle

Use the official online or phone route first when it can solve the task. If you need in-person help, schedule the appointment and bring a complete file.

01

Review program focus

VITA generally helps people who meet program income or other eligibility guidelines. TCE gives priority to people age 60 and older, especially for pension and retirement questions.

02

Check site services

Locations, dates, appointment rules and supported return types vary. Use the official locator and contact the site before traveling.

03

Bring a complete file

Bring photo identification, taxpayer identification cards, income forms, expense records, prior-year return and bank information for direct deposit when applicable.
