IRS appointment checklist: what to bring

Taxpayer Assistance Centers generally operate by appointment. A short document check before you leave can prevent a second trip.

Quick principle

Use the official online or phone route first when it can solve the task. If you need in-person help, schedule the appointment and bring a complete file.

01

Call before you go

Use the appointment line at 844-545-5640. Describe the issue, ask whether the office handles it and confirm the date, time and address.

02

Core identification

The IRS appointment page says to bring two original forms of identification, including a current government-issued photo ID, plus taxpayer identification numbers for everyone involved.

  • Two original forms of identification
  • A current government-issued photo ID
  • Social Security or ITIN cards and numbers
  • A copy of the return for the year in question, if filed
03

Records for your issue

Bring the notice or letter, the tax return for the year involved and any supporting income, payment or account records. Keep originals unless the IRS specifically permits copies.
