Payments

Ways to make an IRS tax payment

Most federal tax payments can be made without an office visit. Confirm the tax form, year and payment type before submitting.

Quick principle

Use the official online or phone route first when it can solve the task. If you need in-person help, schedule the appointment and bring a complete file.

01

Use an official payment route

IRS Direct Pay and an IRS Online Account can support bank-account payments. Card and digital-wallet processors may charge a fee.

02

Apply the payment correctly

Double-check the taxpayer name and identification number, tax year, form and reason for payment. Save the confirmation number or proof of mailing.

03

Do not wait to resolve a mismatch

If a payment is missing from the account or applied to the wrong period, gather the confirmation and bank record before calling or scheduling help.
